One of my favorite ways of photographing things is to make them pop against a dark background. You get dramatic, moody photos without unwanted clutter, and your eyes focus directly on the featured subject.
There’s a sense of minimalism I like about this kind of clean, no-excuses photography.
Indoors, I use a dark backdrop along with natural lighting to achieve this effect.
Outdoors, it’s surprising how it can be intensely sunny, yet focusing and shooting very close to your subject (and sometimes blocking the sun with your body) can make it look as if the photograph was shot in the dead of night.
I understand the mechanics of it, but still it awes me every time I see how photographs shot this way come out!
Today’s post of The Daily Artisan is a collection of some of my favorite dark background photographs. They all were shot with natural light, both indoors and outdoors – and pulling them together for this post made me eager to grab my camera and take more!
