When styling indoors (or finding outdoors) a scene to photograph, I enjoy a juxtaposition of delicate and rustic. Sometimes this means pairing hard lines with soft shapes, or what’s really my favorite is something that inherently contains both qualities.
The juxtaposition can occur in a setting with lots of different elements working together and off each other, or it can more simply be a single object that draws your attention to its contrasting rustic and delicate aspects.
A couple of examples of the latter, for me, are an onion and a head of garlic.
Onions and garlic literally are pulled up from under the soil, and you can’t get much more rustic than that. And, yet, they both have such delicate features when you brush them off and look closely.
A camera in your hands causes you to look deeper and see details that often are unexpected and unique, and it’s one of my favorite parts of photography.
For today’s blog post by The Daily Artisan, I’m sharing a handful of photographs I took of onions and garlic. There’s still some dirt left on a few of them, but what I’m most interested in are their revealed intricate markings, textures and colors, as well as their seemingly fluid movements (like the above photo’s head of garlic where the individual cloves appear to be swaying together to music).
As you take in the world around you, make time to find those moments where rustic and delicate meet – they will surprise and delight you!
